JOB DESCRIPTION: SERVICE TECHNICIAN/MECHANIC

 

Summary/Objective

 

Under limited supervision, the service technician/mechanic position performs work of considerable difficulty in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment; exercises independent judgment and broad discretion with regard to the significant decisions delegated to this position; and related work as assigned.

 

This is a full-time position paid on a weekly basis, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday as scheduled, typically once monthly from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

 

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the service department.

 

No travel is expected for this position other than the ability to arrive at work on time and test driving of customers’ vehicles in close proximity to the dealership as well as on nearby interstate highways when necessary.

Preferred High school or G.E.D., GM Training. Within the last 10, 5 years of experience and/or training in vehicle repair

  1. Within the last 10 years, five years of experience and/or training in vehicle/construction equipment repair and maintenance, equipment repair r shop or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

 

GENERAL DUTIES

 

  • Perform inspections and preventive maintenance of vehicles and related equipment.
  • Diagnose, rebuild and repair vehicles and equipment, based on observational and mechanical testing as well as information provided by the customer
  • Prepare detailed estimates for repairs and replacements and if needed, discuss the estimate and/or repairs with the customers
  • Repair vehicles based on the diagnosed issues and repair estimate, after the customer’s signature approval has been obtained
  • Test drive vehicles after repairs are complete to ensure mechanical soundness and to determine whether any other problems exist
  • Describe vehicle’s condition and estimate of repairs to customer and answer any follow-up questions, if requested
  • Finalize and file appropriate documentation on each repair, as required by the company, including appropriate codes and hours of work for each repair

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions, both hot and cold. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Duties are often performed in cramped or tight positions, such as under the hood or under the car when setting on the garage floor or when on a lift. Employee must be able to work well with others, converse generally sharing and accepting recommendations in a constructive manner and without causing undue tension.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, reaching, stretching while reaching to remove and replace parts, grasping and twisting, pulling, pushing, reaching over head, walking and carrying heavy parts (regularly exceeding 50 pounds) all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or carry or otherwise move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus as well as locate the right parts both in the car and in inventory. Sensory abilities required include ability to feel the parts as well as sense temperature and wetness or dryness, small motor skills, good eye-hand coordination, and the ability to grasp, twist, pull, push, exert pressure, from a standing, laying or overhead position. Employee must have the ability to safely operate a lift and electrical tools, as well as use hand tools, and test-drive automatic and standard transmission vehicles. Employee is expected to work a minimum of 40 hours weekly and to arrive on time for work.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to exercise deductive reasoning to diagnose automotive problems and determine the best method of repair, read English and comprehend customer instructions and complaints, manufacturer’s parts catalogues, instructions, warranties, emails, and other communications regarding what repair services and parts are needed, the correct pricing, the instructions on how to perform the repair, the codes for work to be done, and to be able to determine the proper test to perform to determine what parts and systems are in need of repair, their current condition and to ensure the repair has been performed correctly. Employee must have the ability to do math and calculate how repairs must be done and estimate accurately how much the repair services and parts will cost, to complete the diagnosis and estimate accurately, and other mental functions necessary to exercise sound judgment and discretion as to the significant decisions delegated to this position.
